New Sports Portal Website Saves Time, Connects Teams, Spectators & Participants
Added: 05/08/2008 - Chris Dyson
Worldsportfinder.com will save you valuable time searching endless unrelated results online. Sports teams, participants, and enthusiasts will rejoice over the new worldsportfinder.com portal website.
This new site easy to use and designed simply to connect people who participate and watch sports, at all levels – although amateur and grassroots sports are the primary target. The need is definitely there! Prelaunch testing and focus groups were unanimous.
Sports is big business at all levels and this site is simply an extension of the social networking phenomenon we see emerging. People want to connect and be connected with like-minded individuals and groups. Worldsportfinder simply makes it easy to connect with others in any given sport.
The site has many uses, but the original concept was developed when founder and President, Chris Dyson was on a cross-country trip and looking for auto racing events and ice hockey venues – his 2 primary sports interests. Chris had very limited success in locating what he wanted and short of stopping and asking the local folks or looking in phone books, he could not find what he wanted.
Looking for a specific sports event/location on a trip is a difficult proposition when you do not know the names of the locations, sanctioning bodies or even IF there is a point of interest in the geographical area you are traveling to or through.
Some weeks later and still frustrated, discussing his quandary with friends, the idea of a website where sports people could list and locate events, teams, locations, games, retailers, tournaments, etc., was born. "Kind of an Ebay for locating sports" is how Chris envisioned it. The idea was simple, people would list their sports related item and others could easily search and locate it.
All that was needed was to build a huge database and set up an internal search engine to locate items by many different criteria. Searches had to be very broad and accommodating to the masses because people do not all think or search the same. It had to be easy to use and allow the 'searcher’ to be specific, yet accommodate many variations of searches while pulling only the requested results – unlike the major search engines where you can get hundreds or thousands of unrelated listings from a specific search.
3 GREAT reasons to Use Worldsportfinder.com
Example 1: You are planning a trip to Utah in March and want to catch a couple of stock car races at local tracks while driving through the state. You go to Worldsportfinder.com and type in Utah+stock car. Up pop several options. You could even narrow that search to Utah+stock car race+March+Salt Late City. The broader the search the more results the user will see and the more specific the fewer, but only related items will appear.
Example 2: Another great use of Worldsportfinder is to locate teams to play exhibition matches against. If you’re a coach, you know how hard this can be. With Worldsrtfinder.com things are easy. Simple enter the level of play+agegroup+sport+location and you’ll have a list of teams who are looking for games. (i.e. hockey+1994+AAA+Michigan)
Example 3: Tournaments will love the site, as they will not need to 'chase’ teams. Promoting a tournament outside of your region has always been hard. Teams can’t find the tournament because they don’t know where to look and tournaments have trouble promoting because they don’t have time to search out all prospective teams. Worldsportfinder.com makes this all quite easy. Phase 2 of the website will be focused on tournaments with some major innovations.
The initial challenge for Worldsportfinder.com will be to quickly populate the database with sports related listings. This is no small task and although the original business model was to charge a very modest fee for listings, the company has decided to offer 6 months of free listing to entice new members and listings.
There is a strong possibility that users may not ever have to pay for listings and the site will sell advertising only to generate revenue. "This remains to be seen if we’ll even go back to that 'pay for’ business model", said Chris Dyson.
Dyson adds: "Right now we have to generate traffic and populate the data base with quality listings, so we’re going hard after the entire sports industry to add listings and become THE 'go to’ place on the web for sports. We’ve seen the explosion of Social Networking sites like Facebook and we know people love FREE, so for now we’ll make the site completely free to list and search on. We want anyone and everyone to put up a free listing. We have some huge plans for Phase 2 of the site, which will blow the socks off sports enthusiasts! But until we populate those listings, we can’t move forward, so that is job one for us".
As Worldsportfinder.com grows, so will the listing results. In the beginning users may only see a few listings, which will be great for those who get in early, but as more listings are entered, the results of searches will also grow, but the advantage Worldsportfinder has over the major search engines is that there will never be 'fringe’ or non-related listings showing up.
There are of course, thousands of websites out there where sports tournaments and teams can list, but the advantage Worldsportfinder has over all of these sites is there internal search engines are designed to pull specific targeted results, where almost all of the other 'listing’ sites are just that, long lists of teams, tournaments, or whatever. And no one wants to look through a list to find what they want.
This site may be one to watch as it has the potential to become a huge player in the sports world. This could be the next 'big one’.
